What are the GED Exams?
The GED exams are a series of five different tests
- Language Arts, Writing
- Language Arts, Reading
- Mathematics
- Science
- Social Studies
designed to measure skills that are generally associated with high school instructions. The GED exams are only administered at Official GED Testing Centers around the state; no GED exams may be taken online in the State of Wyoming. |
|
Who is eligible to take the GED exams?
Students eighteen (18) years old and over are eligible to take the GED exams. Each candidate must meet the following minimum requirements:
A. Individuals shall be at least 18 years of age and not currently enrolled in an accredited high school, including those accredited by regional accrediting bodies and also those approved by the jurisdiction’s department or ministry of education.
B. Only persons who do not hold a standard high school equivalency are eligible to take the GED exams.
C. Under no circumstances may the GED exams be administered to persons less than 16 years of age. |
|
Age waiver application:
Students who are sixteen (16) and seventeen (17) may apply to take the GED exams by submitting an Age Waiver Application (PDF). All candidates wanting to take the GED exams, who are 16 and 17, are required to attend an Adult Basic Education program prior to submitting the Age Waiver Application. Students must complete the Official Practice Test (OPT) series scoring a minimum of 450 on each of the five exams with an overall battery average of 500 before the application may be submitted for approval to the GED State Administrator. Once the application is received at the state office, the GED State Administrator will approve and contact the GED Testing Center where the candidate will be testing stating that the candidate may begin GED testing. Each candidate must begin testing within eight (8) weeks of the approval or resubmit another Age Waiver Application. |
|
Passing Standards for the GED exams
The General Educational Development certificate consists of five exams. In order to receive the Wyoming Certificate High School Equivalency, the students must score at least a 410 on each of the five tests and have a complete battery average of 450 (total standard score of 2250).
|
|
Non-passing score
Once a student has taken all five exams and the overall battery average does not total the necessary 2250 or 450 battery average, the candidate may take each exam two more times in a calendar year. For example, if the overall battery average is 440, the candidate may choose to take one of the five exams over to bring the overall battery average to the 450. Should this not happen, the candidate may only take the repeated test one more time in a calendar year (January to December) to bring the battery average to the 450. Each test may only be taken three times in a calendar year.
|
|
Retesting
If the candidate has taken all five of the GED exams and received a passing score of 410 on each exam with a 450 overall battery average and wants to retest, there are four approved reasons by the state for retesting:
A. When the scores do not meet the requirements for post secondary entrance, or
B. The candidate is trying to obtain a Hathaway Scholarship, or
C. The candidate is meeting workforce requirements, or
D. The candidate is enlisting in the armed forces.
Please discuss retesting with the GED Examiner at the testing location. |
|
Special Testing Needs
To ensure that all candidates are able to have equal access to the GED exams, accommodations may be provided to the candidate. Each candidate is responsible for requesting accommodations for testing along with the appropriate accommodation request form. Each accommodation request form must provide the appropriate documentation to support the requested testing accommodations.
Available accommodations are: Extended Time, Audiocassette, Individualized Testing, Supervised Breaks, Use of a Calculator for Part II of the Math exam, Scribe, and Braille.
For information regarding testing accommodations, please contact either the Adult Basic Education center or the GED Examiner at your local testing center.

|
Testing Fees
Each testing center sets the testing fees but must remain within the range of $50 to $75. GED exams are not available online and therefore should not be taken online. The exams are only valid if they are administered by an Official GED Testing Center in the State of Wyoming.
